Developing better PMs with Ocado’s product skills framework
Product Management means different things in different companies. For some, it grows out of project or engineering roles; for others, it begins with a single hire.
At Ocado Technology, with a product management function of over 100 product managers, it became critical to clearly define what great product management looks like regardless of level, location, or background.
In this keynote, Matthew Feczko, Director of Product Operations, shares how he and his team introduced a Product Skills framework to bring clarity, consistency, and fairness across Ocado’s product organisation.
Rather than prescribing what product managers do, the framework outlines the skills, attributes, and competencies needed to succeed enabling sharper recruitment, fairer promotions, and more meaningful development across the employee lifecycle.
This talk explores how a shared language of skills has not only helped professionalise product at Ocado, but has also inspired other disciplines like Engineering, Data, and UX to define what excellence looks like in their own functions.
